Convention Highlights

Past Presidents’ Reception

This new ICTA tradition returns for a third year, and you won’t want to miss it! Join us on Thursday evening starting at 8:30 p.m. to kick off convention with a meet and greet hosted by ICTA Past Presidents! This reception will take place in and around the Entre Restaurant and Bar. All attendees are invited. Meet colleagues - old and new! Raffle prizes will be included.

Keynote Speaker

This year, ICTA is proud to have Executive Director of the School of Communication, Dr. Stephen Hunt, as the Keynote Speaker at our convention. Please join us on Friday morning for our opening session, beginning at 8:30 AM, for Dr. Hunt's Keynote Address. Dr. Hunt's biography is listed below:

Dr. Stephen Hunt serves as Professor of Communication and Executive Director of the School of Communication at Illinois State University. He recently completed an assignment serving as Co-Chair of Illinois State’s American Democracy Project. As an American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Civic Fellow for Political Engagement, he helps lead national efforts to sharpen the political and civic leadership skills of today’s college students. Hunt is the author of over 30 scholarly articles, many focused on civic and political engagement, and is co-author of a public speaking textbook focused on critical thinking and civic engagement that is used by several communication departments throughout the country. Hunt earned his Ph.D. in communication education from Southern Illinois University in 1998.

Electronic Script Exchange (Secondary Ed. Forensics)

For many years ICTA has sponsored a script exchange as one of our key services at convention. For the past several years, we have collected scripts electronically to share with interested members. All those who would like to participate need to send an electronic copy of a performance ready script for Prose, Poetry, Declamation, HI, HDA, DI, or DDA. Be sure to include specific publication information as well. Scripts should be sent to Justin Matkovich between NOW and October 3. The collected scripts will then be e-mailed to all who contributed. Feel free to share more than one script. Don’t miss your chance to share your expertise with colleagues and to find some great new material!

Electronic Swap Shop

The Swap Shop has been a highlight of ICTA for many years. Swap shop participants email a lesson plan, article, activity, or any other teaching idea for the classroom or extracurricular activities. Members who would like to participate should email an activity, lesson plan, article, etc. to Brian Rohman. Please feel free to share more than one item; this is a great way to share your ideas and expertise with your peers and get new ideas you can use in your classroom.

Book and Materials Exchange

Bring books or materials related to your discipline that you would like to contribute to the exchange table; take books that interest you. This is a fantastic way to pass along materials and books and to find some new gems.

President's Reception

In addition to breakfast both mornings and lunch on Friday being included in your registration fee, all members are invited to attend the President's Reception. This year’s President’s Reception will feature deserts and trivia hosted by ICTA Past Presidents Doug Jennings and Judy Santacanterina! Teams will be 4-6 individuals. If you do not have a team going into the reception, we will have plenty of teams with space available for you to join! The reception will begin at 8 p.m. (after dinner on your own).

Secondary Education Individual Events Coaching Workshops

A recurring feature of the ICTA convention is a popular series of workshops for coaches. The focus of the workshop sessions is to help new coaches as well as experienced coaches with information and tips you can begin using this season. These sessions and workshops will run on Saturday only, starting with two morning sessions and two afternoon workshops. There will also be two IHSA sessions on Friday morning that deal with new rules, proof of publication, and other hot topics. Contact Justin Matkovich for more information.

Professional Development Units

ICTA is a registered Professional Development Provider for Illinois K-12 teachers. PD hours are earned 1 per eligible session. Please use the “Conference-at-a-Glance” as your checklist. You will also need to fill out an evaluation form (77-21A), available at the registration table. Return this to the registration table and provide your IEIN number. You will receive the completion form (77-21B).
